Friends will have seen on show at St Fagans National Museum of History
the glorious silk banner from the early 1900s, the voodoo doll and
other objects relating to the growth of the movement for Women’s
Emancipation. Today’s talk will add substantially to our knowledge of a
hitherto neglected area of Welsh history, outlining the Edwardian
women’s suffrage societies, the opposition to the campaign, and the
impact of the First World War. With over thirty years’ experience as a former history lecturer and very highly-rated teacher in the post-sixteen sector at various institutions in Caerffili, Ryland has in retirement continued his research into the area of women’s suffrage. His book ‘The Women’s Suffrage Movement in Wales 1866 -1928’, published by the University of Wales Press, and innumerable articles in academic journals have established his reputation as an authority in his chosen field. He still lives in Crucywel, where he was born and raised, and is an accomplished cricketer who captains the Wales 60+ team (or Dinosaur Dragons!). The admission charge for this event, to include post-lecture coffee and biscuits in the Oriel Suite, is £8 for Friends’ pre-paid bookings, and £10 at the door. If you wish to take advantage of this concessionary rate, please complete the slip below and send it with your cheque by Wednesday 17 October to: Janet Jones, Brayton, Llantwit Road, Creigiau, Cardiff CF15 9NN. Tel: 029 20890216. Email: janet.jones@friendsmuseumwales.org.uk If applying for more than one event, please send separate cheques for each one. To minimise postal costs, no acknowledgement will be sent. Since this event is open to members of the public (£10 in advance or at the door), do tell your friends. They will be very welcome. |
