Following
coffee at St Bartholomew's Church, our morning visit will be to the
Elizabethan Corsham Court, ancestral home of the Methuen family, where
a private tour led by the present owner James Methuen-Campbell
has been arranged. A feature of the house is the C18 Picture Gallery
designed by Capability Brown, containing works by masters such as
Van Dyck and Joshua Reynolds. Friends who watched the TV series
Elizabeth’s Secret Agents last October may recall the famous
portrait of the Tudor queen, reputedly the only true likeness, which is
another of the ‘must see’ works on display.
Furnishings in the house include pieces by renowned craftsmen such as
Chippendale while the extensive gardens are also a notable feature .
On leaving Corsham, we shall make the short journey
to picturesque Lacock ,often seen in period TV dramas, where a
variety of establishments offering lunch can be found.
Lacock is owned and managed by the National Trust, a notable attraction
being the C13 Abbey in the centre of the village which also houses the
Fox Talbot Museum of Photography, marking the work of one of the
original photographic pioneers. Many features of the original
Abbey, long since a private house, still survive. The woodland garden
boasts a fine display of flowers, fine trees, a C18 summer house , and
Fox Talbot’s newly restored botanic garden.
