| July
2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Mametz Wood which was
the 38th (Welsh) Division’s first major battle in World War
I. The Battle was fought to exploit the limited gains of
the first day’s fighting of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July.
The talk will include the raising of the Division in late 1914, the
unsuccessful attack on the Wood on 7th July and the second assault on
10th July which resulted in the Wood’s capture and made possible the
later attack on the German Second Line on Bazentin Ridge on 14th July. In 1916 people in Wales would have known little about the Battle, but would have learned of it later from survivors and, after the war, from books on the subject. The deep impression it created on the public led to it being commemorated in several ways, such as, a child’s name and the Mametz Ward at Cardiff Royal Infirmary. Many will also be aware of art works such as the Mametz Wood murals by Frank Brangwyn in the Grand Hall at the National Museum Cardiff and the painting The Welsh at Mametz Wood by Christopher Williams, which will be one of those included in the exhibition on the Battle being mounted at the National Museum Cardiff this summer. Gavin Davies was born in Yorkshire but has Welsh ancestry and has lived in the Vale of Glamorgan since 1970. He is a retired Chartered Surveyor and has been interested in military history since he was at school and has a particular interest in the Great War and American Civil War. He is a member of the South Wales Branch of the Western Front Association which raised the money for the construction and recent refurbishment of the Memorial to the 38th (Welsh) Division at Mametz Wood which will be the focal point for this year’s centenary commemoration. |
