| Salisbury Cathedral
formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is
an Anglican cathedral and one of the leading examples of Early English
architecture. The main body of the cathedral was completed in only 38
years, from 1220 to 1258, and it has the tallest church spire in the
United Kingdom (123m/404 ft). The cathedral also has the largest
cloister and the largest cathedral close in Britain (80 acres (320,000
m2)). It contains the world's oldest working clock (from AD 1386) and
has the best surviving of the four original copies of Magna Carta. Mompesson House - When walking into the celebrated Cathedral Close in Salisbury, visitors step back into a past world, and on entering Mompesson House, featured in the award-winning film ‘Sense and Sensibility’, the feeling of leaving the modern world behind is deepened. [The new exhibition for 2015 features photographs and costumes from the 1995 film ‘Sense and Sensibility’.] The tranquil atmosphere is enhanced by the magnificent plasterwork, fine period furniture and graceful oak staircase, which are the main features of this perfectly proportioned Queen Anne house. In addition, the Turnbull collection of 18th-century drinking glasses is of national importance. The delightful walled garden has a pergola and traditionally planted herbaceous borders. Timetable Depart Cathays Parks: 7.40 am Depart Wild Gardens Road, Roath Park: 8.00 am Arrive Salisbury Cathedral: 11 am (approximately) – allowing for a comfort stop en route. 11.15 Guided tour of Cathedral, guided tour of Cathedral Close or visit to Mompesson House (The maximum size of the party is 52, which will be divided into three groups for the three tours.) 12.45 pm Luncheon in Sarum College 2.00 pm Guided tour of Cathedral, guided tour of Cathedral Close or visit to Mompesson House Depart Salisbury: 5.00 pm. Arrive Cardiff: 8.00 pm. The cost of the visit is £40.00, inclusive of coach travel, lunch, gratuities and tour of the Cathedral, but excludes the admission charge for Mompesson House (Free for National Trust Members). Admission Charge for non-NT members is £6.50, making the total cost of the visit £46.50.
